Base Miami Finds Success Despite Pandemic

Not long after Base Miami became a Federation partner, COVID-19 spread around the world, but even a pandemic couldn’t stop the success of the program and the inspiring duo behind it: Rabbi Adam Gindea and his wife Jessie. In the past year, more than 700 individuals attended a program or social event, 434 participated in Jewish learning and 237 shared an outdoor Shabbat or holiday meal with the Gindeas. With the mission to provide a pluralistic and intimate learning community for young Jewish adults and families tied to the home hospitality of a rabbi, the very idea that makes Base unique also allows it to thrive during the coronavirus crisis. Ironically, Base was tailor-made for staying safe during COVID-19. “We were never meant to be a group that offered Shabbat for 200 people,” said Rabbi Adam. “The fact that we were creating events and opportunities for 15 or so people from the beginning really enabled us to be nimble and create a COVID-19-conscious space for people to come together, connect and create community during a very isolating time.” Looking ahead, there are nearly 30 opportunities to get involved with Base before the High Holidays, from text message-based Torah classes and Shabbat meals to Torah meditation and virtual and in-person Kiddush club.
