Planning for a Hurricane
In an effort to be a more inclusive and welcoming community, Federation recently hired an inclusion specialist to work with individuals and families seeking local programs and services for themselves or their loved ones with disabilities. With hurricane season in full swing, it's an important time to address the situation, which can be unpredictable and scary, especially for those with atypical neurological experiences, including developmental disabilities, mobility issues and dementia.“The key for caregivers and families is to explain what is expected and the changes in routine,” says Nancy Zaretsky, Federation Inclusion Specialist. Zaretsky recommends using a visual story to describe the situation in a realistic yet comforting way.
