JCRC Initiatives Educate Against Rising Hatred

In the wake of the rise in anti-Semitic rhetoric and hate around the world, the Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation has organized a number of ongoing and multi-fold initiatives that unequivocally denounce racism, anti-Semitism and bigotry. From training teachers in the Miami-Dade County School District to community engagement and interfaith gatherings, the JCRC is working to enhance the strong bond of unity that permeates our Jewish and interfaith communities. Some of their programming efforts this past year included:

  • Training for Miami-Dade County Teachers
    • A cross-section of teachers from Miami-Dade County Public Schools attended a JCRC workshop to learn how to introduce Jewish-related content into curricula for junior high and high school students.
  • Interfaith Dialogue
    • JCRC’s Speakers Bureau, Faith in Each Other, discussed Israel and Judaism with members of local churches, including the Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church Congregation.
  • Community-wide Gatherings
    • Nearly 1,000 people of various faiths attended Federation’s Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Memorial Day) and Interfaith Gathering, where a broad coalition of clergy, elected officials, Holocaust survivors and civic leaders denounced discrimination in all of its forms.
  • Advocacy
    • JCRC urged Congress to support the Anti-Semitism Awareness Act of 2016 and to join the Bipartisan Taskforce to Combat Anti-Semitism.
  • Community Outreach
    • Following the recent violence in Charlottesville, VA, JCRC and Federation, issued a public statement denouncing the white supremacists and neo-Nazis whose hateful racist and anti-Semitic rhetoric incited deadly violence and terror.
    • Joining with other South Florida Federations and other like-minded community organizations, JCRC and Federation released a full-page ad in the Sun Sentinel and an Op-Ed in The Miami Herald. These collaborative efforts to unequivocally denounce racism, anti-Semitism and bigotry demonstrate the strong bond of unity that permeates our Jewish and interfaith communities.
