Israel Trauma Coalition Lends Expertise to Parkland Community
As the teachers, students and community surrounding Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School begin their long road back to recovery following the horrific tragedy last month, the Israel Trauma Coalition (ITC), a Federation-funded partner, has provided a team to assist those dealing with the effects of the tragedy. Since arriving last week, ITC members have met with more than 450 teachers, counselors, clinicians, clergy and first responders. The ITC team will also meet with Federation partner agency Jewish Community Services (JCS) in the coming weeks. The team from Israel has extensive experience in treating victims of trauma and knows the best techniques to help communities — and especially children — begin the healing process. The ITC was also among the first to arrive following the mass shooting in Las Vegas and Hurricane Harvey.
The Jewish Federation of Broward County and Goodman Jewish Family Services, are helping coordinate the services of the Israeli team. In addition, the Broward Federation is opening an office in Parkland that will offer help and healing to the community from clinicians, social workers, psychologists and psychiatrists. Community leaders expect the office to be up and running for at least two years to deal with the long-term impacts of the tragedy.
The Greater Miami Jewish Federation is supporting its neighbor to north in raising funds for the Broward Trauma and Mental Health Fund. To make a donation, click here. One hundred percent of the funds will go directly to the cause.
