Repair the World and Federation Welcome New Fellows to Miami
Say Shalom to the new Repair the World Miami Fellows: Bevy Daniel and Liv Kleimen. Repair the World Miami, a Federation partner, works closely with our Jewish Volunteer Center (JVC) and Young Leadership Division (YLD) to create impactful volunteer opportunities for young Jewish adults. During their year-long service commitment, the duo work with local nonprofits to support their missions, bring in more volunteers and create learning experiences for local Jews to better understand social justice and mobilization. For Bevy, organizing through a Jewish-justice lens to “combat issues of social injustice [makes] my Judaism feel present and pertinent, something that make me a more powerful and rooted organizer…a more Jewish Jew."
Bevy’s involvement in social justice began at Northwestern University, where she helped organize campaigns around immigration and economic justice with the Jewish Council on Urban Affairs. Focused on elevating peoples' voices into policy, Bevy was drawn to Repair the World by its emphasis on the Jewish imperative towards justice. “More than anything, I see Judaism as a framework for a just society, our texts and history as a grounding, and justice work as praying with our feet," said Bevy. Bevy is working closely with Health in the Hood and the Green Haven Project, two community gardens; Lotus House, a shelter for women and children experiencing houselessness, and Branches, a center that provides myriad services for Florida City's students, adults and families.
Liv was raised in an actively Jewish home, regularly attending syngagogue, spending her summers at Jewish camp and particpating in Hillel. "I have loved connecting with other Jews in Miami while having meaningful conversations about making change together," she said. Liv is spending her time in Miami volunteering with LEAP, a nonprofit that helps incarcerated women successfully re-enter society; Belafonte Tacolcy Center, which provides resources, empowerment and education for children, families and adults in Liberty City, and "The Shop" at Miami-Dade County public schools, which provides free clothes, food, school supplies and more to the community.
