Saul Schottenstein Foundation Helps Families Celebrate the High Holidays
Myra’s famous holiday dessert, fondly referred to as Bubbie’s Spongecake, may not have made it to the table this year without the help of The Saul Schottenstein Foundation. Thanks to the vision of philanthropist Saul Schottenstein, of blessed memory, clients of the JCS Kosher Food Bank, the Greater Miami Jewish Federation’s primary human service agency, welcomed 5782 with joy, dignity and a few special touches. In addition to food packages provided for the New Year, clients also received a gift card to a grocery store, allowing them to shop for personal favorites to include in their holiday festivities — like the ingredients for Bubbie’s Spongecake. “I had so much fund taking my granddaughter to Publix and shopping for all the ingredients for my cake,” said Myra. “Now I am going to teach her how to make it and spend the whole day with her. Thank you and the Schottenstein family for making this possible.”
A resident of Columbus, OH, Saul Schottenstein always enjoyed his time at his second home in Miami. "In his memory, his foundation extended this program to serve individuals in the Miami community who need a little extra help," said Susie Diamond, Schottenstein’s niece. As we continue to see long-lasting economic effects of the pandemic, food insecurity is a growing problem. The Saul Schottenstein Foundation also provides the cards in advance of Chanukkah, Passover and during the summer.
