A Story of Inclusion at JCC Summer Camp
Landon, Lauren and Liam love summer camp at the Alper JCC Miami. This past summer, the experience was even more meaningful when their brother, Logan, joined them. Logan has special needs and his impairments have made it difficult for him attend school or camp with his siblings. But thanks to the the Shirley & Chester Paul Special Needs Program, Logan enthusiastically shared the summer with his twin brother, Landon, and the rest of the family at Camp J Miami.
The experience was transformative. By playing side-by-side with typically developing peers, Logan’s social skills improved. Since his time at Alper, he is more comfortable and confident and initiates play with other children more readily.
“Logan always arrived and left with a smile at camp. I believe this is a result of the caring, supportive and understanding environment fostered by the staff and children in the camp,” his mom, Barbara, said. “Logan was included in all of the activities. When I look at the picture of Logan and his friends at camp, it’s difficult to tell him part from the others because everyone is participating together. There are no words to express how grateful I am for the opportunity to attend the Alper JCC Miami camp. It was, without a doubt, a wonderful experience for Logan and his brothers and sister.”
