Miami-Dade County Teachers Learn About Teaching the Holocaust
“Being here is monumental for me as an educator and an African American male,” affirmed Harvey Stribling, one of 50 Miami-Dade County public school teachers who attended a workshop at the Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach on June 14 as part of a week-long Holocaust studies program. The joint initiative, presented by Miami-Dade County Public Schools and the University of Miami Holocaust Teacher Institute, introduces educators to the Holocaust Memorial as a dynamic teaching resource. In addition to a tour of the facility and a group discussion outlining the goals of Holocaust education in Miami schools, teachers received relevant curricula to share with their students and, perhaps most impactful, heard the first-hand account of Survivor Fred Mulbauer detailing his youth in Eastern Europe and the horrors of his internment in Auschwitz. At the end of the day, Stribling said, “I now have a wealth of knowledge and understanding of the Holocaust — the history of it and the human behavior behind it. I feel empowered to go back and teach about it in the classroom.” The Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach is a Committee of Federation.
