Tikkun Olam in Action
What does tikkun olam (repairing the world) look like? How about 2,000 toys in the hands of happy children; 1,560 snacks filling hungry bellies; 700 bouquets of flowers adorning a once-empty table and 350 cards offering cheer to those who need it most? Since November, the Greater Miami Jewish Federation Jewish Volunteer Center and its dedicated team of mitzvah-makers have been hard at work ensuring that, despite the pandemic, people in need would still have something to smile about this holiday season. The ever-popular Season for Giving — a series of Jewish community volunteer days — was held for the 13th consecutive year, inspiring 400 volunteers to participate in service projects from the safety of their homes or through socially-distanced, hands-on opportunities. Activities ranged from wrapping gifts and distributing food to collecting toys and participating in at-home projects, which were then distributed to Camillus House, Miami Rescue Mission, Ronald McDonald House and other local nonprofit organizations.
