JVC Volunteers Help Seniors Schedule COVID-19 Vaccine Appointments

Vaccine Appt

Nearly two months after COVID-19 vaccinations have began, many Miami-Dade seniors are struggling with the technology required to book appointments for the shots. With a system that relies on online access and computer knowhow, according to the Miami Herald, only approximately 28% of people 65 and older have received their vaccine. But dedicated volunteers at Federation’s Jewish Volunteer Center (JVC) are helping to improve vaccine access and protect our community’s oldest residents. Working with Jackson Health System and other vaccine sites, JVC volunteers have secured more than 400 appointments for seniors.

Twenty-five teenage and adult volunteers are calling seniors to facilitate vaccine appointments. For those who find themselves overwhelmed with navigating the logistics, it has been a lifeline. “They have been surprised and so appreciative that we are able to register them,” said 15-year-old Matthew Lewis, who has been giving his time and energy to the project. “This has been a really challenging time for everyone, especially seniors as they are so isolated. The vaccine protects them, and hopefully with time will allow them to step back into normal life.” If you or someone you know is eligible to receive the vaccine, but needs assistance booking an appointment, please contact JVC Director Lori Tabachnikoff at ltabchnikoff@gmjf.org.
