Volunteers Create an Outdoor Classroom at the Alper JCC Miami
The coronavirus pandemic has highlighted the need for educators to think outside the box and the Glen Greenstein Early Childhood Development Center (ECD) at the Federation-supported Alper JCC Miami is doing just that. Thanks to some creativity and hard work by Federation’s Jewish Volunteer Center (JVC) and its South Dade Gives Back Committee, an unused outdoor area on the north side of the ECD building has been transformed into a true outdoor classroom, complete with an organic garden. Sandra Blasberg-Imar, Alper JCC Miami Early Childhood Director, said, “This intentional outdoor space allows children to learn in creative ways, have fun and be safe. It is a great way to engage our children, have them explore their environment and grow their imaginations.”
Fifteen volunteers rolled up their sleeves and helped assemble equipment, install a mud sink, add mulch and bricks and create an organic garden. The result is a space that offers exciting learning experiences for preschoolers. “With a clear vision and the community’s help, we have made a dream come true,” Blasberg-Imar added.
