THEMES OF THE SEASON: A Meaningful Exploration of the High Holy Days

This four-session virtual course will guide us through the preparatory month of Elul, and the holidays of Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and Sukkot, so that we can approach the High Holiday season with the awe, contemplation, joy and renewal of this most extraordinary period of the Jewish Year.

Wednesdays, Sept. 4, 11, 18, 25 | 10:00-11:30 am ET (virtual)

Session One - September 4

Elul & Slichot - A Spiritual Jaunt through the Days Before Rosh Hashanah

With Rabbi Dr. Leon Weissberg

Elul, the last month before Rosh Hashanah, and Slichot, the last post-Shabbat prayer before the High Holidays, is full of mystical and historical meaning unknown to most Jews. In this session we will take a deep dive into this month of the Jewish calendar.

Session Two - September 11

Beyond L'Shanah Tovah - Exploring the Philosophical Underpinnings of Rosh Hashanah

With Dr. Sandra Lilienthal

Rosh Hashanah is the New Year (or one of the new years) of the Jewish calendar. Yet, its philosophical themes go much deeper than just the start of a New Year. It prepares us for a future that can only come if change happens -- change in ourselves, in our communities and in the world. We will discuss many of the themes that make Rosh Hashanah such a theologically and spiritually important holiday.

Session Three - September 18

Yom Kippur: "I’m Sorry, So Sorry" Please Accept My Apology

With Rabbi Norman Lipson

"Repentance, Prayer, Tzedakah, avert the harshness of the decree.” תשובה, תפילה, וצדקה, מעבירים את רוע הגזרה

Prayer? I read the prayer book. Tzedakah? I donate to charity. Repentance? How do I do that?!?

Join Rabbi Lipson (with apologies to Brenda Lee) in exploring of the open-ended process of performing Teshuva/ Repentance for sins committed or for actions not taken, for sins against God or against our brothers and sisters, against nature, the world around us and yes, even against ourselves

Session Four - September 25

One Year Later: Finding Joy in the Festival of Joy

With Dr. Bella Tendler Krieger

Sukkot is known as the Festival of Joy. Simchat Torah, which we celebrate at the conclusion of Sukkot, literally means “Rejoicing with the Torah.” One year after Hamas’ devastating October 7 attack on Israel, which took place on this holiday, it is hard to imagine finding joy in this festival. This session will explore insights for how this can be done and seek inspiration from the efforts of contemporary Israelis valiantly fighting to rekindle joy.

In the aftermath of October 7th, amidst heightened antisemitism and anti-Zionism, Yom Ha’Atzmaut and Yom Ha'Zikaron hold deeper significance than ever before. Our decisions, narratives, traditions and calls to action will significantly influence our community member’s connection to Jewish identity and the State of Israel.

M²: The Institute for Experiential Jewish Education, a national organization that helps educators and organizations design compelling educational experiences, is holding gatherings around the country to help those who program Yom Ha’atzmaut and Yom Hazikaron rethink how things might be done differently this year.

CAJE-MIAMI INVITES YOU TO Join Yehudis Smith, Director of Early Childhood and Congregational Education, as she shares with you what she gleaned from the M² “Yamim Project” workshop that she attended in Chicago.

The Art, Music, and Poetry of the Holocaust with Dr Robert Watson

It was not enough to simply try to stay alive. Many noted Jewish intellectuals, composers, and artists in camps such as Theresienstadt hoped to preserve a degree of humanity in the face of almost certain death and unspeakable horror. So too did they realize that Hitler was not just trying to eliminate European Jewry but also the culture. This program celebrates the art produced in the camps and explores this unique lens into the Holocaust.

March 30th, 7 PM at Beth Torah Benny Rok Campus 20350 NE 26th Ave, Miami, FL 33180

Dr. Robert Watson and Award Winning Film Director Josh Aronson present: "Orchestra of Exiles". They will share the story of Bronislaw Huberman, the Polish violinist who founded the orchestra that became the Israel Philharmonic, as told through Aronson’s film “Orchestra of Exiles”. Before the Nazis came to power Huberman was focused only on building his own monumental career but witnessing Hitler’s agenda was a call to action that Huberman could not ignore. Together they will explore Huberman’s personal transformation and subsequent heroic struggle to get Jewish musicians out of Europe during World War II.

Wednesday, May 12th, 7 PM

*Dr. Sandra Lilienthal presents: "Living Life in Radical Amazement - Inspired by the Teachings of Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel". Whether it is because we are too busy running around, or because we are staying indoors while there is a pandemic, most of us have very little time or energy to "stop and smell the flowers." Built on Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel's teachings, we will explore both the theological and practical implications of living a life in which we direct ourselves to experience amazement and awe in the world that surrounds us, the people we meet and in our deepest selves. “As civilization advances, the sense of wonder declines. Such decline is an alarming symptom of our state of mind. Mankind will not perish for want of information, but only for want of appreciation. The beginning of our happiness lies in the understanding that life without wonder is not worth living. What we lack is not a will to believe but a will to wonder. (Heschel).”

Wednesday, May 19th, 7 PM

Dr. Samuel Edelman presents: "Jules Isaac: The French Jewish Historian Who Changed Christianity". Jules Isaac's name is unknown to most in the Jewish world. More than 73 years ago Isaac, a famous French Jewish historian, wrote a critically important book titled "Jesus and Israel" during the height of the Holocaust while in hiding. The impact of his writing began a Jewish Catholic dialogue which would inspire and change Christian Jewish relations and alter the Catholic Church's attitude toward Jews in a dramatic and substantial way. Dr. Edelman will share Isaac's personal story and explain the importance of his writings in helping Pope John the 23rd in bringing about the Church's change of attitude toward Jews and Judaism as expressed in Vatican II and the document "Nostra Aetate".
