Join us on 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟭𝟮 𝗮𝘁 𝟳𝗽𝗺 for a lecture by Dr. Nathan Devir on African Jewish Perceptions on Racial and Religious DiscriminationThis lecture will offer a series of impressions, gathered from fieldwork among a number of different African Jewish communities over the past decade, regarding perceptions of racial and religious discrimination. Combining anecdotal accounts with references to historical and discursive sources, the lecture will highlight specific individual and community notions of discrimination on the part of neighbors, state establishments, global Jewry, and Israel.𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗣. 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗿 is Associate Professor of Religious Studies and Comparative Literary and Cultural Studies at the University of Utah, and formerly the director of that institution’s Middle East Center and Religious Studies Program. His research focuses on Jewish-related movements in Sub-Saharan Africa. He is author of New Children of Israel: Emerging Jewish Communities in an Era of Globalization (University of Utah Press, 2017).
