Event Details

Description

September marked two years since Israel signed the Abraham Accords, normalizing relations with several of its Arab neighbors — a major milestone for peace in the region.

Join us to hear Brigadier General (Res.) Professor Jacob Nagel, Israel’s former National Security Advisor to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and an expert in defensive technologies. He will discuss the overall geopolitical landscape and Technion innovation in aerospace and security science.

With his finger still on the pulse of high-level policy and foreign relations, Prof. Nagel will discuss Iran’s nuclear agenda, the tensions between Israel and Russia, the potential path to normalization with other Gulf countries like Saudi Arabia, and what’s in store for the new government, expected to be elected November 1. As head of the Technion’s Advanced Defense Research Institution (ADRI), he will take us inside Technion research in AI, cybersecurity, electro-optics, lasers, and aerospace engineering, with real-world applications to Israel’s national security.

About the Speaker
Brigadier General (Res.) Professor Jacob Nagel, a Technion graduate, returned to his alma mater in May 2017 as a visiting professor in the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering. An expert in defensive technologies, he heads the Technion’s Advanced Defense Research Institute (ADRI), home to the Center for Security Science and Technology (CSST) and the Peter Munk Research Institute.

Prof. Nagel served as head of Israel’s National Security Council (NSC) and as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s National Security Advisor (acting) from January 2016 to May 2017. During that period, he signed the 10-year memorandum of understanding between the U.S. and Israel for $38 billion military aid to Israel. From 2011 to 2015, he headed the Strategic and Defense Policy Directorate at Israel’s NSC, where he led the team working with the superpowers to negotiate the Iran nuclear deal. During his more than 40 years of experience in Israeli intelligence, serving in the national signal intelligence unit 8200 and in the Ministry of Defense, he also headed the “Nagel Committee” responsible for Israel’s decision to develop the short-range ballistic missile defense system Iron Dome.
